More than £50,000 in grants has been awarded to 12 charities from the Newcastle Building Society Community Fund.

The grant funding from the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland has provided grants of up to £5,000 each to charities across the North East, Cumbria, and North Yorkshire.

The funding aims to support organisations addressing food poverty, sustainability, work, debt management, and homelessness.

Some of the charities receiving the funds include Skills4Work in Gateshead, YMCA Northumberland, Meadow Well Connected in North Tyneside, Citizens Advice Carlisle and Eden, and Hambleton Foodshare in North Yorkshire.

Priorities for funding are informed by Vital Signs North East 2024, the latest series of reports developed by the Community Foundation.

Donna Stubbs, community manager at Newcastle Building Society, said: "Our Community Fund is just one of the ways we seek to deliver value for members and create positive impact in our communities.

"Demand for grant funding from charities is high and it’s clear that members value the opportunity to nominate their worthwhile causes.

"Our community priorities and the Vital Signs North East 2024 reports help us focus our efforts and support on projects that can have the greatest impact - benefitting not just the charities and their service users but their wider communities too."
