An Ancient history fan has raised over £2,400 for charity after trekking 25 miles of Hadrian's Wall while dressed as a Roman soldier.

Jonathan Terry took part in a trek with a difference last weekend, to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK after losing his dad Steve to the disease in 2021.

Jonathan marked his 40th birthday by dressing up as a Roman legionary and walking 25 miles along the legendary Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland together with his brother Stuart Terry and friends Torbjorn Soltvedt, Alun Chave and Alex Clarke.

The three-day walk, which started on Friday, September 13, was supported by Trimontium Roman Museum, who lent the group authentic replica Roman and native warrior outfits.

Jonathan led the quintet on the three-day trek, and waiting for Jonathan and Stuart at the end of the walk will be their immediate family, including Steve's grandchildren Leo (aged 3), Ellie (aged 1) and Austin (aged 8 months). The museum even has a special Roman outfit ready for Leo who will join Jonathan and the warband for their final strides to remember his grandad.

Jonathan said: "The experience of having a loved one go through this awful disease has certainly changed my outlook. I prioritise quality time with loved ones and friends more than I did previously and living in the present more - you can't wind the clock back and it is time spent that you will never regret.”

"I’ve always been into ancient history, and for some time I’ve wanted to walk Hadrian’s Wall. As I’m turning 40 in September, I decided now is the time. However, ever since Dad died, I've also wanted to do something to help raise awareness of this disease which kills a man every 45 minutes in the UK - more than 12,000 men each year. The walk seemed like a great opportunity to do this.

“Dad was not the sort of person who liked to be the centre of attention, but I think he would be proud of us doing something positive in his memory by supporting Prostate Cancer UK and the important work they do.
