Hexhamshire news

SUMMER came to Whitley Chapel First School on Sunday (well it certainly was an improvement on last Sunday!) for the annual Sunday lunch. BACK by popular demand, and not for the faint-hearted, the ’Shire Trail takes to the road on Sunday, August 31, with new destinations and new stories.

Wark proceeds: A massive £3,385 was handed over to Northumberland Parkinson’s Disease foundation at the Battlesteads in Wark from the organisers and workers involved in the Wark charity lunch. Margaret Archer, left, assisted by Richard Slade of the Battlesteads, centre, hands over the cheque to Dr Paul Edmonds of the foundation.

Tables set around the playground gave rise to a natural stage where the enthusiasm and energy of the Splitz dancers brimmed over as they gyrated around the tarmac.

The Newcastle All-Star Ukulele band also provided a wonderful turn and this, along with all the delicious food served at lunch, was much appreciated by the 80 or so diners.

Thank you to all who supported this event and to those who generously prepared the wonderful repast.

AT THE July meeting of Hexhamshire Parish Council, members were informed of an open meeting to be held at 6pm in the Council Chamber in Hexham on July 22. This is being organised by Tynedale Council to discuss the proposed closure of the post offices.

If anyone would like any more details, please contact Brian Massey.

A BUSINESS directory for the ’Shire has been compiled and copies went out at the beginning of the month in the parish magazine.  For those who did not receive a copy and would like one, they will be available from the Dipton Mill Pub, the school and the church.

The compilers apologise for any omissions in the new business directory and, if anyone is not included, and would like to be incorporated into the next issue of the directory, they should pass on their name and address to any parish councillor.

THE leek club is preparing for its summer fun. The Sunday barbecue is at The Granary on August 17. Rain or snow it will go ahead as there will be canvas to shield you from the elements.  Face painting and children’s games will available to amuse the children while the adults get down to the serious part of the afternoon – eating and drinking.

Come and join the party and have a fun-filled afternoon.

Tickets can be obtained from the Three Musketeers, Bennett, Can, or Trevellyan.

A seat on this magical mystery tour can be all yours. Contact George Canon, (01434) 606693, as soon as possible as places are limited.

The ticket includes a picnic lunch, served alfresco, by the delectable ’Shire lasses.

THE annual Hexhamshire tennis challenge against Riding Mill was a tense affair this year. Basically, Whitley Chapel was beaten!  The Whitley Chapel team consisting of Mel Silcock, Brian Massey, Robin Charlton, Alastair Stevens, Niels Kristensen and Christopher Porter tried their best. Unfortunately, based on games won – 93 to 87 – Riding Mill claimed victory.

Everyone enjoyed the afternoon of tennis and thanks go to Riding Mill for acting as superb hosts.

A trophy is to be produced for next year’s event and, in the meantime, rules are to be checked on double left-handed combinations and dress code. They don’t like to be beaten!
