Workers strike over pay offer

SCHOOLS have stayed closed and bins remained unemptied over the last two days, as a strike by local government workers crippled council services.
Members of the Unison union, including binmen, office workers and caretakers, walked out on Wednesday and yesterday in pursuit of a six per cent pay claim.
Pickets were on duty outside Tynedale Council’s council chamber on Wednesday for a meeting of the planning committee.
One councillor refused to cross the picket line, but most simply went in through the back door.
Shaftoe Trust First School at Haydon Bridge had to close completely, while Hexham Priory School was open to staff only.
Humshaugh and Mickley first schools closed on Wednesday, reopening yesterday. The nursery at Whittonstall First School was also closed.
There was no refuse collection service. Green wheelie bins due to be emptied on Wednesday or yesterday will not be collected until today, while grey recycling and garden waste bins will not be picked up until July 30-31.
Unison members are said to be “disappointed and angry” at the 2.45 per cent pay offer, which they claim has left them choosing between putting food on the table or heating their homes.
