Dean Macey

ALL those who have been poisoned by the cynicism of modern sport or who are in despair over the lost idealism that is the Olympic Games would have had their faith restored by the performance of decathlete, Dean Macey in Hexham last weekend.
After years of battling adversities that would have beaten lesser men he fought pain and disappointment in an increasingly despairing chase towards his third Olympic appearance. The tears of his watching family must surely have been tempered by their pride in the epic nature of his struggle.
It was a privilege to glimpse his brilliance and to marvel at a great athlete and a giant of a man. His sacrifices in pursuit of his dreams are symbolic of a truly Olympian struggle and the games will be poorer for his absence.
