The 15-strong group have been crowned the regional winners of the boys’ section in the Sainsbury’s Track and Field Athletics Cup.

They shook off local competition at Gateshead International Stadium, before travelling to Hull recently to compete against 13 teams from around the region.

The event featured discus, javelin, shot, long-jump, triple-jump, high-jump and hurdles, as well as number of running events.

Ovingham student Nick Cairns won the 200 metres and shot, while James Jordon won the discus and 400 metres, and Johnny Carr the hurdles.

Overall, the school scored the most points with what PE teacher Deborah Goodwin described as a series of “outstanding performances”.

The national finals will feature only the six highest scoring teams, and so Ovingham Middle School will not be going forward.
