Welcome to Tynedale

HE came, he saw, he conquered – not Julius Caesar, but the name of the Roman emperor on everybody’s lips over the past year… Hadrian.
Come to Tynedale and you’ll find yourself on the edge of the northern frontier of Hadrian’s Empire, where the best surviving examples of his defences can be explored.
Hadrian’s Wall with its string of forts, milecastles and turrets snakes its way across the district and its importance is such that it’s been designated a World Heritage Site. Hadrian has also been the focus of recent national attention, with the British Museum dedicating its main exhibition last year to the famous emperor.
The enormously successful exhibition attracted thousands of people. And thousands of people come to Tynedale every year to marvel at the Roman ruins, located amidst some of the most dramatic scenery in the country.
Building fortifications wasn’t just a Roman activity though. This is Border Country and the ruins of once mighty castles stand all over Tynedale – a reminder of the wars with the Scots.
In later, more stable times, the fortresses gave way to grand country houses. Tynedale has more than its fair share and some private houses open their gardens to the public for charity once a year. Turn to the gardens section for more information.
For wide open spaces and glorious walks, you’ve come to the right place. Whether it’s the striking beauty of the North Pennines, the gentle riverside glades dotted around the dales, or the far horizons of Northumberland National Park, Tynedale can cater for anyone who loves the great outdoors.
There are several cycling routes, including the challenging, graded rides at Kielder Water and Forest Park – also the home of a new observatory which makes the most of the darkest skies in England.
If you prefer more solid ground underfoot, take a wander around the historic streets of Hexham with its three towers – St Wilfrid’s Abbey, the Moot Hall and Old Gaol. Hexham has many other treasures. See if you can spot them on our featured walk through the town.
For shops with a difference, you’ll want to experience the charms of Corbridge, whose golden-stoned buildings contain gourmet restaurants and exclusive boutiques.
