THEY have one of the best band names around, and their latest EP is pretty decent too.
North-East five-piece Peculiar Disco Moves, whose drummer Danny Ward hails from Allendale, has returned with the funky three-track Hot Off The Press.
The band has gained a reputation for their razor-sharp wit and insistence on having a laugh, and their latest offering continues the trend.
Onto their third EP since their debut release in 2011, they have treated their fans to quirkily-addictive songs I Don’t Want the World to End on Tuesday and, more recently, When Your Mother Goes Home.
And now they have produced something to rival those tracks as our favourite in EP opener Breaking News.
The snazzy track details how celebrities can be hot one moment but dropped the next, and it will have you tapping your toes during a catchy two-and-a-half minutes.
Lead singer Alix Shepherd’s vocals come to the fore in the follow-up American Way, with its upbeat start. The song tails off towards the end, but overall scores highly as the band continues to mix it up.
They certainly like to do things their way, and their sound provides something different to the many commonplace guitar-laden rock bands.
The dominance of Shepherd’s electric piano in Glamour Girls, which has a sound of the opening to Bohemian Rhapsody, is evidence of their creativity.
While the final track doesn’t live up to the others, they deserve a lot of admiration for their willingness to experiment with sounds and insistence to stick with what they love.
