WORK will begin this weekend to extend the platforms at Riding Mill railway station.
Network Rail and Northern are working to carry out the improvements from Saturday, January 12 to Friday, February 1, with workers having been at the station preparing the work since Monday.
The extension of the platforms is being carried out to accommodate for longer trains with more seats, as part of the Great North Rail Project, which is delivering a multi-billion pound package of improvements for customers across the north of England.
The project will also see platforms at Prudhoe and Bardon Mill extended, although these will come in a later phase of the project and no dates have been given for when the work will take place.
Network Rail said the work would not impact on train services.
