THE North-East and Cumbria are among 50 hospital hubs taking part in the first wave of the Covid-19 vaccine programme.
The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which manages the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital, and the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven, have both been named.
The news of the UK becoming the first country in the world to have a clinically authorised coronavirus vaccine was welcomed across the Tyne Valley, with MP Guy Opperman describing it an 'incredible feat of medical and scientific ingenuity' and 'light at the end of the tunnel.'
As the vaccine is readied for roll out on Tuesday, people aged 80 and over, care workers and NHS workers will be first to receive the jab.
