RESIDENTS have blasted a council's new street names - which include Respect Way, Humanity Close and Inspire Avenue.
Baffled Brummies living in Birmingham's Perry Barr have branded the road names as "PC nonsense" which do not reflect the reality of the working class area.
The suburb has depravation levels among the worst in the country and is currently undergoing redevelopment for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
As part of the £500 million project an Athletes Village was supposed to be built providing accommodation for 6,500 athletes and team officials.
But this was scrapped in the summer after a review into the impact of the coronavirus pandemic found it could not be delivered on time.
Instead, the Athletes' Village will now be turned into a housing estate as part of a wider regeneration scheme and the six new street names form part of this development.
The names of the roads which will serve 1,400 homes will be Diversity Grove
Equality Road, Destiny Road, Inspire Avenue, Respect Way and Humanity Close.
But they have been met with a storm of fierce criticism by Birmingham residents who have branded them a waste of taxpayer's cash which will make them a "laughing stock".
Others mocked the council by pointing out the similarities to David Brent's Comic Relief comedy single 'Equality Street' - which itself took a dig at political correctness.
Steve Zacharanda, 44, who runs community website The Perry Barr Star, said: "I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
"This new estate was meant to be the new athletes village for the Commonwealth Games and we are already a laughing stock across the world after admitting it will not be finished in time for games.
"If they wanted road names to reflect the spirit of the 2022 Commonwealth Games then the roads would be called "Disappointment Drive, Broken Promises Path, Endless Congestion Close."
