LATEST coronavirus figures for the Tyne Valley show a reduction in the number of cases in some areas - and cause for concern in others.

Northumberland County Council records the number of active cases - per ward - over a seven day period.

And while wards in the Tyne Valley remain the worst affected in Northumberland, there are signs of improvement in the west, but cause for concern further east.

Haltwhistle continues to top the list with 37 active cases over the latest seven-day period. However, this is a considerable reduction on the figure for Christmas Eve, which stood at 55 active cases.

Cases remain high in other parts of the district. Prudhoe South is second on the list with 29 active cases, and Prudhoe North second with 27, alongside Hexham Central with Acomb, and Haydon & Hadrian on 26.

The ward with the highest number of active cases outside of Tynedale, recorded over the latest seven-day period, was Alnwick, with 26.

Elsewhere in the district, the numbers are as follows. Corbridge 24; Hexham East 22; Humshaugh 21; Bellingham 18; Ponteland West 14; Hexham West 14; South Tynedale 11; Stocksfield & Broomhaugh 10; Ponteland South with Heddon 6.

According to the latest data from Public Health England, a total of 10,942 people have tested positive for the virus in Northumberland since the start of the pandemic - an increase of 150 on Tuesday's number.
