A GOOD Friday tradition, the fish and chip shops across the country are usually rammed full of people wanting to get their Easter chippy tea.

The origin behind the tradition is that, according to Christianity, Jesus was executed on Good Friday and died for our sins, so the church encourages followers to abstain from eating meaty flesh on the anniversary of Christ's death.

Instead of meat, fish is traditionally eaten by Christians.

We asked readers of the Hexham Courant on social media where the best places are in the district to purchase the best fish and chips.

Balls of Prudhoe

The fish and chip shop on Front Street, in Prudhoe, has long had a reputation for providing some of the best battered fish around.

The company was praised during the Covid pandemic for its sterling service to get food to people unable to get to the shop for a takeaway, Balls introducing a delivery service during lockdown.

Pamela Jewitt, Zoe Bradley and Julie Fisher all recommended Balls on Facebook.

Paxtons, Hexham

A staple in Hexham Town Centre over the years, the family-run chip shop is extremely popular with town residents and visitors alike.

Joanne Williams and Letitia Derrick Thompson were keen to sing their praises on social media.

Oceans, Haltwhistle

The west of the Tyne Valley is well catered for when it comes to fish and chips, and Oceans, based next door to the Centre of Britain Hotel on Haltwhistle's Main Street, is a big hit.

Mandy Armstrong recommended Oceans by leaving a comment on the Hexham Courant Facebook page.

The Fryery, Haltwhistle

Another business located on Haltwhistle's Main Street, The Fryery offers a great range for those wishing to grab a fish dinner.

Hayley Turner is a fan and recommended the business via Facebook.
