Football clubs across the North East have backed a new road safety campaign ahead of Euro 2020.
Drink and drug driving typically increases during major sporting tournaments as people gather to watch matches over drinks.
To combat this, Newcastle United, Sunderland AFC, and Middlesbrough, along with Road Safety GB North East, have urged people not to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the tournament.
During Euro 2016, the region saw an increase in drink and drug driving injuries in the region on the day of and the day following England matches.
With matches taking place at Wembley and the impacts of lockdowns over the last 15 months, it is expected that a party atmosphere and increased alcohol consumption will be likely.
Lee Johnson, Sunderland manager, said: “We’re all looking forward to Euro 2020 and like all football supporters, I’m hoping that England give us plenty to cheer about.
“If you’re having a few drinks while watching the games, please remember to leave the car at home, and think about whether you’re still over the limit the following day.”
Johnson’s comments come as figures reveal that on north east roads between 2016 and 2020, 1,476 people were injured in collisions involving a suspected impaired driver, with 343 seriously injured and 29 killed. In 2020, there were 8 deaths on the region’s roads involving drivers impaired by drinks and drugs, the highest rate since 2014.
A spokesperson from Newcastle United said: “For anyone heading out to watch the Euros and planning a drink, we urge you to leave your car at home. Stay safe, keep others safe, and help to make it a memorable tournament for all the right reasons.”
Superintendent Sam Rennison of Northumbria Police warned that officers would take robust action against anyone driving impaired this summer and said: “Our message to fans is a simple one – don’t get behind the wheel of a car when you’ve been drinking or using drugs.
“Your reaction time slows down and it’s more difficult to focus on the road and rive in a safe manner. Road traffic collisions tear families apart and it’s crucial that people are aware of potential consequences of driving over the limit prior to getting behind the wheel.”
Euro 2020 started on Friday night with Italy beating Turkey 3-0 in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico. England's first game was a 1-0 victory against Croatia on Sunday afternoon.
