AIR ambulance is at the scene of an accident involving a lorry and a car between the Gilsland turn-off at Greenhead and the Shell garage, Low Row. 

Cumbria and Northumbria Police are also in attendance at the crash on the A69.

The road is closed in both directions to allow emergency services, including fire, to work.

The road is closed between the Brampton A6071/A69 junctions and the Greenhead B6318/A69 junctions and is expected to remain closed until this afternoon.

Motorists should expect delays to their journey.

Highways England diversion route eastbound:

At the A69/A689 roundabout take the 2nd exit 

Travel towards Brampton on Greenhill, turn right onto Carlisle Road

Turn left and travel north on the A6071

Prior to Newtown, turn right signposted Walton/Roadhead

Travel north easterly and merge onto B6318

Continue on B6318 via West Hall and Gisland 

Re-join A69 at Greenhead

Motorists travelling westbound should follow the above route in reverse.

Diversion routes are not suitable for HGVs and they should use the A1 and A66.

A Northumbria police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 8.45am today, we were contacted by officers from Cumbria Constabulary who had responded to a report of serious collision, involving an HGV on the A69 at Greenhead.

“Officers and emergency services remain in attendance and the road has been closed in both directions and a diversion put in place.

“Enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision remain ongoing and anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to contact police immediately quoting log NP-20210818-0179.“

A North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokesperson said: "An ambulance, air ambulance, doctor and a response vehicle responded to the RTC following a 999 call at 08.23. We did not take anyone to hospital."
