EMERGENCY services attended the scene of a fatal two-vehicle crash on the A69.

A 41-year-old car driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Air ambulance, police and the fire service were all called to the major accident involving a lorry and car during the morning of Wednesday, August 18, between the Gilsland turn-off at Greenhead and the Shell garage at Low Row.

The road was closed in both directions to allow emergency services to attend.

The road was closed between the Brampton A6071/A69 junctions and the Greenhead B6318/A69 junctions.

Motorists experienced heavy delays for much of the day as a result of the accident.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Officers are appealing for witnesses after a man died in a collision.

“Officers from Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols department attended the scene alongside emergency services, but despite the best efforts of all involved, the 41-year-old driver of the car died at the scene. His family are now being supported by specialist officers.”

Inspector Dean Hood from the force’s motor patrols department added: “This was a serious collision which has sadly killed a man and our thoughts are with his family at this incredibly difficult time.

“Our investigation is ongoing and we are gathering information to build up a picture of how the collision occurred.

“However we would still ask anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dash cam footage and has not yet come forward to get in touch immediately.”

Anyone with information, or dashcam footage is asked to contact 101, or use the Tell us Something page on our website, quoting log NP-20210818-0179.

The road has since reopened.
