Prudhoe Seniors golf team have made a successful defence of the Seniors Team Challenge with a convincing 16 point victory over former two time winners Seaham.
Newcastle United and Consett finished joint third with 259 points. But Prudhoe’s 281 points meant that the team scored an impressive average of better than 1 over par.
The eight-man Prudhoe team took full home advantage to repeat their victory at Ryton in 2019. Due to the pandemic, the event wasn’t staged in 2020.
Now in its 12th year, this Challenge tournament for senior golfers was first played in 2010 when, coincidentally, the host club was Prudhoe.
Prudhoe Seniors’ Captain, Peter Whitlock, said: “I’m delighted that we won the Challenge again. All the lads performed very well and congratulations to Colin Rothwell for winning the individual title with 40 points. We hope to defend our title next year and continue to develop our friendships with the other clubs.”
Peter, his vice captain, Trevor Smith and seniors chairman, Michael Robson, weren’t far behind in the individual honours with 39, 38 and 38 points respectively.
The participating teams, with number of Seniors Team Challenge wins, are:
Birtley - 1
Consett - 3
Garesfield - 0
Heworth - 0
Newcastle United - 1
Prudhoe - 2
Roseberry Grange - 0
Ryton - 2
Seaham - 2
Tyneside - 0
Whickham - 1
If the original rota is followed then Challenge 2022 will return to Consett who will be hoping to add to their three wins.
