AFTER overcoming the relentless challenges of Covid restrictions, tennis players in Riding Mill were able to compete in the club’s 2021 championships.
Live scores from the five finals were relayed to a TV screen, updating spectators seated in the new-look, outdoor social area at the club.
A rather one-sided men’s final, which saw David Stewart overcome Rob Archer 6-1, 6-0, was followed by a thrilling meeting in the ladies’ final between Ann Mates and Debra Vickers in a match that went to three close sets.
Ann failed to capitalise on four match points, before Debra fought back to take the deciding set, eventually winning 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
The pair were back together on court later in the day to take on Caroline Coates and Suzie Aitchison in the ladies’ doubles final. After losing the first two games, Caroline and Suzie came back strongly to take the title 6-2, 6-3.
Long rallies and close games were the features of the men’s doubles final, which saw David Stewart and Scott Breen overcome Andy Hancock and Colin Simpson 7-6, 6-4.
Colin was soon back on court to partner Carol Pynn in the mixed doubles final. Their opponents, Susie Troup and Scott Breen, were on their top form. But Colin and Carol dug deep to win 6-3, 6-4.
Trophies were presented to the victorious players by club chairman, Rob Archer, and honorary member, Ann Brown-Searle.
