AN ACOMB sportsman has had a busy season.
Matthew Ferguson represented the Scotland u20s Squad against Ireland in Dalkeith. The game ended 37-30 to Scotland.
And just the week later, the rugby player turned out for the same team against England in Leigh. The game ended 48-22 to England.
Reflecting on play, he said: "We had three selection training sessions and on the third one, we found out if we were on the squad for both the Ireland and England game.
"The Ireland game started really tough and we went behind in the first few minutes but managed to dig in and get the win in the end.
"The England game started completely opposite and we went two tries up in the first ten minutes, but unfortunately, in the second half, England were the better team and started running in try after try through our own mistakes."
Matthew, who is a personal trainer and runs bootcamps on the Acomb playing fields, also competed in the Arnold Fitness Games.
The event, the first of its kind in this country, was held at the NEC in Birmingham, and saw competitors take part in CrossFit workouts.
Before being invited to compete in the games, Matthew had to complete three qualifying workouts.
"I was very surprised to qualify for the Arnold Fitness Games as this was my first ever CrossFit competition", he said.
"I was very nervous going down but as soon as the first workout was done, I settled into it.
"The day consisted of four workouts and every one was as tough as the other. It was a great experience though and hopefully, I can do it again next year!"
