A trip down memory lane, we take a look back at the stories to have hit the headlines 10, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125-years ago. Do you remember any of the events?

Bin cash rejected: County Councillors in Northumberland will not be applying for any of the £250m set aside by the Government for the restoraton of weekly refuse collections.

Last orders: A popular pub on Military road has closed. The Robin Hood, East Walhouses served its final pint. The pubs landlord has not renewed the lease and it is nt known whether any new tenant has bene lined up.

Funds for campaign: Objectors to an open cast site are trying to build up  a fighting fund to oppose the application. As the formal application at Hoodsclose, near Whittonstall, grow closer to submission, people and businesses near the site hav been approached for donations to fight the scheme. The group has conducted a survey of local businesses which has revealed deep-set fears about the possible adverse impact of the scheme. Only one  was in favour of the opencast scheme.The surve also revealed concerns abuot tourism, the environment and traffic, as well as the need for coal in the first place.

Airplane crash : A near fatal air crash involving two Great North Air Ambulances crewmenwas caused by faulty air-craft parts, a High Court Judge has ruled.

Jim Martin, from Wylam and John Ker from Rothbury both suffered horrific inhuries when their microlight aircraft broke apart in mi-air.

And now, a five year legal battle for compensation has ended with a ruling at Newcastle Crown Court that the air-crafts French manufacturer was liable for the crash.

Mr Martin and Mr Ker were lucky to survive th crash in 2007 when the rear end of their aircraft fell off, causing the plane to nose-dive. The pair, with Mr Martin lost control, had left Eshott Airfield, near Alnwick, when the incident happened.

Stepping down: Hexham's MP Peter Atkinson resigned as Conservative Party Whip in the House of Commons, choosing to concentrate on duties as a chairman of all-party Parliamentary committees.

Traffic snarl-up: There was serious congestion in Prudhoe, after a vancarrying welding equipment caught fire on the A695 causing the road to be closed for four hours.

Safety first: Major work was under way to car out vital safety improvements to the lay-out and design of Hexham bus station

Rates rise expected: Hexham's housholdes were reported to be facing theri largest rates increase for10 years- an 11p hike to 103.5p.

Bronze Age find: A Bronze Age cist containing a huma skeleton and bronze dagger was unearthed at Allerwash,near Newbrough.

Vehicles vetoed: Hexham's Fore street became a pedestrian precinct.

U-turn on resevoir : Northumberland County Council withdrew its objections to the proposed Kielder reservoir, then the subject of a public inquiry at Newcasle and decided to give the scheme its backing instead. This U-turn lefr only two organisations opposed to the scheme Bellingham Parish Council and the North Tyne Preservation Society.

Lasing benefits: Despite some public reservations  Hexham's MP Rupert Spei forecast the new air-screw-Weyroc chipboard factory in Hexham would bring long-term benefits to the town.

Out of plaice: A fish shop in Prudhoe was fined £1 after being foudn serving customers after 10pm.

Pollution fears: Resident in Acomb were concerned that rubbish was being dumped in a quarrynear to wher the illage's water suppliers were drawn from.

Food scaricity forecast: The previous month's snow-storms were likley to lead to Tynedale farmers ' food producton that year being much reduced and customers' larderrs being left bare, it was reported.

Buzz off: The Northumberland Beekeepers' Association urged members not to engage in the 'unsportsmanlike' practice of leaving open empty hives to attract stray bees from rivals.

Postive charge: In its first week of operation, 500 vehicles parked in the new Hexham British Legion car park, generating almost £9 in revenue.

  • 100 years ago

​Train plans derailed: Hopes that a light railway might be built between Alleneads and Eastgate, Weardale were dased when the Ministry of Transport confirmed that such as project would prove too expensive to be viable and would not be considered anyway unless  substantial private-sector funding was forthcoming.

Bridge campaign revived: Renewed calls for a bridge over the River Tyne to be built between Ovingham and Mickley Junction were made by workmenforced to use often-dangerous ferry.

Falstone fund-raiser: A whist drive at Falstone Village Hall raised £21 for the St Dunstan's charity for the blind.

Wheel excitement: One of the star attractions at a varierty show at Gem Palace in Hexham, was trick cyclist 'Care Devil May'.

Stocking up: It was reported that failies in Mickley were stocking up on supplies of coal way ahead of a treatened strike by miners.

Rail strike: A rail strike by North Estern Railway Company staff over their woking conditions had little impact on Newcastle-Hexham train services. Only two workers at Cprbridge railway station took industrial action and none at Hexham joined in.

 

  • 135 years ago

Health Hazard: The edical officer in Haltwhistle was asked to investigate the effectiveness of sewage ventilation grating in the town.
