HEXHAM Abbey is celebrating a £50,000 funding boost for its East End Masonry Conservation and Repair project.

Remedial action has already taken place on the abbey's exterior east end, due to loose masonry blocks, to minimise the risk to the public but comprehensive repairs are needed.

The restoration project will involve masonry and glazing repairs and the provision of pigeon deterrent measures. Broken flags at the north east end of the abbey, which suffered damage during recent roof works, will also be repaired.

Work will begin after Easter and will continue through to the summer. It will see a scaffold over the whole east face of the abbey.

“The PCC is extremely grateful for the assistance in funding from the following charitable trusts: SUEZ Communities Trust, Hexham Abbey Restoration Trust, Headley Trust and Northumbria Historic Churches Trust, that will enable this project to proceed", said Richard Thornton, chair of property committee at Hexham Abbey, who is leading the project.
