RARE baby goats are now at a Northumberland zoo.

Five Bagot goat kids were born at Northumberland College Zoo at Kirkley Hall.

The first kid was born just over two weeks ago, while two pairs of twins followed a week later.

There are four boys and one girl, born to three of the zoo's female Bagot goats and a male Bagot goat who arrived at the zoo last year.

Another female Bagot goat is expected to give birth soon.

Bagot goats, an ancient breed believed to have been introduced in England in the 1380's, had been considered 'critically endangered' by the Rare Breed Survival Trust, with only 100 registered breeding females in the UK.

The black and white breed is now classified as 'Vulnerable' by the Rare Breed Survival Trust, with an estimated 300 breeding females known.

"The fact that we have got five in the zoo is really good," said Rebecca Duckworth, an outdoor keeper at the zoo.

"They are doing really well. They've had such lovely personalities from the get-go."

Steven Sykes, Animal Centre Resource Manager, said the kids have proved very popular with the zoo's visitors, and that the college's students are "very much in love" with them.
