A FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD has become the youngest ever County Champion in golf.
Queen Elizabeth High School pupil Charlotte Naughton took the win at the 100th Northumberland Ladies County Golf Championship.
The championship, held over three days, follows the format of 36 holes stroke play and three rounds of match play.
At the same competition, Charlotte's older sister Zara, who attends Ponteland High School, became the Northumberland County Under 18 Champion for the second year running.
Ponteland Golf Club member Charlotte qualified for the match play knock out in 5th place, before cruising to a nine and eight victory in the first round of the knockout stages.
In the quarter finals, she faced last year’s champion Rebecca Ferguson, with Charlotte taking the win at the 18th hole.
Both Charlotte and Zara progressed to the semi-final where they were drawn against one other. The match was level for most of the game but Charlotte took the victory on the 17th hole.
Charlotte later faced former professional Claire Brown in the final. With Zara caddying for her, the sisters tactfully plotted their way around the course forcing the game to extra holes - Charlotte matching her elder on every hole. On the 3rd extra hole, Charlotte’s birdie putt sealed the victory.
Both girls will now represent Northumberland in the forthcoming Northern Counties Match Week.
