READERS gave their opinions on what they thought of the new changes to legislation on causing death by dangerous driving.
As of June 28, the maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving, or for causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs, has increased.
The changes to driving penalties were announced by the government on Tuesday, May 10.
The maximum sentence available to the courts has now increased from 14 years' imprisonment to life imprisonment.
The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill included an increase to the maximum penalty for causing death by careless driving when the offender is under the influence of drink or drugs.
The bill also introduced a new offence - causing serious injury by careless driving.
The maximum penalty for this new offence is two years' imprisonment.
Previously, drivers were either charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving or with careless driving.
One reader said the new legislation 'should of happened years ago,' with another saying 'not before time'.
Another reader added: "Long overdue. Need to get uninsured drink drivers next."
Someone else commented that it was 'great, just hope the woke judges use their new powers'.
One reader was sceptical, saying: "Yeah right and a couple of month good behaviour."
