A NEW shop and café in Hexham which has been unable to open due to electricity problems finally has power.
Joanne and Gordon Moore had hoped to open The Natural Grocer on Cattle Market, at the former site of Nichol & Laidlow, this month.
But the opening of the shop, which will sell cooks' ingredients and other niche products that are not available in most supermarkets, was forced to be delayed because they had no power amid complications re-energising the property.
The pair told the Courant they were "hemorrhaging money" because of the hold-up.
However, after nearly six weeks, the shop finally has electricity.
"We're thrilled that it's on," said Joanne.
The couple, who previously ran the Border Reiver in Otterburn, said it now means they can progress jobs they were previously unable to without power, such as sorting out fire alarms.
"It is starting to look like a shop now," added Joanne, who said they have begun putting stock on the shelves.
They are now working towards an opening date of September 13, although it may have to be pushed back a week due to a delay in getting a date for a telecom installation so they can accept card payments.
Joanne and Gordon said they have received lots of support from people in the area ahead of The Natural Grocer's opening.
"We've had several people sticking their heads in saying 'So pleased your electricity is on', 'We're really looking forward to you opening', 'I hope you do really well', 'It's just what Hexham needs' - random people that we don't know putting their head in," said Joanne.
One kind person also gave them a charcuterie gift box.
"It was a lovely surprise," said Joanne.
As well as selling niche grocery products, the shop has been granted a licence to sell alcohol for consumption on and off the premises.
The Natural Grocer will also have a café space, with customers able to try some of the products on sale.
