OVER 200 cyclists took part in the inaugural Wylam on Wheels bike ride.
The event was organised by local cycling group the Wylam Sprockets and raised over £5,000 for the Wylam Community Playing Fields Association which is responsible for the upkeep of the Jubilee Playing Field in the village.
Participants set off from Wylam and completed either a 60km route, which included climbs up Hedley on the Hill and Kiln Pit Hill, or a 25km circuit via Bywell and Stocksfield.
Both routes finished on the Jubilee Field where returning cyclists were rewarded with afternoon tea and entertainment from local band the Wild Women of Wylam.
Sarah Grainger, on behalf of the Wylam Sprockets, said: “We were delighted to attract so many cyclists which included both families with young children, teenagers and adults of all ages. The youngest participant was five and the oldest 84.
"Thanks to everyone who helped to organise the event and all the volunteers who baked cakes for the afternoon tea. A big thanks to the Spar, our major sponsor.
"We are keen to promote cycling and we hope this event will encourage more people to get out on their bikes”.
Another cycling event Waggonway on Wheels also attracted cyclists of all ages and abilities on a three-mile route.
Cycling Without Age provided free rides at the event, where there were also a range of adapted bicycles.
Frances Slowie said: “We are lucky to have the Waggonway for this kind of event which aimed to be as inclusive as possible.
"Thanks to Stephenson Arms Campsite for the use of the field."
The Wylam Sprockets hope to organise more cycling events next year.
