RETROSPECTIVE plans to convert a garage into a holiday let in Gilsland have been submitted.

A planning application has been lodged with Northumberland County Council for permission to use a former detached garage as a one-bed holiday let with associated external works - specifically the insertion of windows and doors - at North View.

A cover letter from Addis Town Planning on the planning portal explains how the applicants have owned the property since 2018.

It says that in 2019, the advice given was that the conversion would be permitted development and would not require planning permission.

The holiday let was not let out until August 2021 after conversion work was completed in March 2020. The cover letter says it has been popular with tourists and the elderly.

Parking is proposed in an area adjoining the holiday let that is already in use by the host property, the letter explains.

It concludes: "There is planning policy support for appropriate development within service villages, such as Gilsland, alongside support for development that promotes tourism and reuses existing buildings."

The full application can be found on the Northumberland County Council planning portal under the Ref. No. 22/04331/FUL
