LOCAL leaders have shared their sadness at a "senseless tragedy" in Hexham.
MP Guy Opperman for Hexham said: "I am horrified that such a tragic incident has taken place in our town and my thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the families of those involved."
Councillor Glen Sanderson, Leader of Northumberland County Council, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear about this tragic incident in Hexham and our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the young people's’ families and friends at this very distressing time.
"As a council we will be providing every support we can."
Northumberland County Councillor for Hexham East, Suzanne Fairless-Aitken, who is also a town councillor for the Priestpopple ward, added: "I am utterly shocked by this senseless tragedy and my thoughts are very much with the families of those involved.
"Our small town is shaken by this - it strikes at the core of our community - and is every parent's worst fear."
Councillor Trevor Cessford said: “I’m shocked and dismayed to hear of the tragic loss of life of this young girl and my thoughts are with her family and friends.
"This is a sad day for all involved. Young lives, and those who care for them, ruined for ever. It’s beyond my comprehension.“
Hexham Abbey is inviting people to light candles in the wake of the tragic incident.
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Kim McGuinness said: "Absolutely devastating news from Hexham- incidents like this should never happen and are truly shocking.
"All my thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones of the victim. Thank you to Northumbria Police for their response to this horrific case."
Hexham Town Council said its thoughts were with the families. Adding: "The incident has shaken the very core of our community."
Ian Hutchinson, Northumberland County councillor for Haltwhistle, said his thoughts are with Holly's family and friends, adding: "It's a tragedy that should never have happened. It's a real shock."
