THE greenhouse at Hexham's cemetery is being brought back to life for community use.

With the large space being unused for some years, town councillors Ginnie O'Farrell and John Ord have been thinking about ways to make the most of the resource.

They turned to Amy Hemmings, co-ordinator of the garden-sharing project Grow Hexham, who is now setting it up as a community greenhouse.

Grow Hexham matches gardeners with idle gardens, and Amy said it will be "another way for people to get access to the resources they need to grow their own food".

"It offers people a bit of additional space," she said.

Anybody will be able to use it, with each gardener allocated a space in the greenhouse. They will be able to visit as often as they like.

Hexham Courant:

The first user of the greenhouse is going to be Hexham Community Garden.

Volunteers from the garden will come to the greenhouse for seed-planting sessions in the spring, and the seeds will be left to germinate and grow there, until it's warm enough for them to be planted out at the community garden.

All the produce grown at the garden is free to be harvested by the local community, and any surplus will be donated to Hexham Community Grocery.
