A MARRIED couple will embark on a fundraising challenge in May.

Anne Deif, 72, and her husband Mo, 70, will complete the Moonwalk 2023 which raises money for cancer charity Walk the Walk.

Walk the Walk is a UK grant making breast cancer charity. Being a grant making charity means everybody participating in its challenges is fundraising for Walk the Walk, which grants funds to other charities and organisations throughout the UK, to help treat breast cancer.

The couple, who live in Matfen, will walk 15.2 miles at night in London starting from Clapham Common on May 20. All participants wear bras that have been decorated to a specific theme.

Anne has rheumatoid arthritis which affects her joints and movement, and estimated it would take around five hours to complete the walk.

She said she and Mo decided to complete the walk partly to support a good cause and partly to challenge herself.

"Cancer has touched many people in my life not least my dearest friend who lost her battle some years ago and I miss her terribly. I also have a close friend who has just started her chemotherapy journey. We have friends who have won the battle and others not so lucky.

"Without challenges like the MoonWalk, money would not be forthcoming for research, scanners, doctors and dedicated hospital wards. My aunt was a cancer doctor and the director of the Royal Marsden Hospital in London and I think she would be proud of me taking on this challenge."

The Moonwalk has been held for 25 years in London and Edinburgh, and participants can choose to walk either 15.2 miles or 26 miles.

Anne said they have had support from local businesses and are in the process of organising fundraising events with The Black Bull pub, Matfen Village Hall and an afternoon tea on Easter Sunday at Matfen Village Store.

"Cancer is always a very dear subject and I think once you put the word out people will respond very generously, I hope.

"We both have to raise at least £100 each," Anne said.
