REFUGEES and local people came together in Hexham for a candlelit vigil to mark the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The vigil took place on Friday, February 24 - exactly a year since the war began.
The event began with a walk from the top of Sele hill to the Abbey Cloisters, with people carrying candles and torches as well as Ukrainian flags.
Walkers were met in the Abbey Cloisters by members of the Antiphon Choir, a local chamber choir, who sang two moving pieces, one a lullaby which ends in the poignant line 'Where should we rest tonight?'.
This was followed by speeches from both locals and Ukrainians. Some spoke about hope and peace, as well as their gratitude to the people of Hexham for offering them sanctuary.

A prayer was spoken and the one-minute silence was followed by a soloist singing the traditional song 'The Red Viburnum' in Ukrainian.
Around 120 people attended.
