A MARRIED couple have begun training to complete a 15-mile fundraising walk for a cancer charity.

Anne Deif, 72, and her husband Mo, 70, will complete the Moonwalk 2023 on May 20 which raises money for cancer charity Walk the Walk.

Walk the Walk is a UK grant-making breast cancer charity. Being a grant-making charity means everybody participating in its challenges is fundraising for Walk the Walk, which grants funds to other charities and organisations throughout the UK, to help treat breast cancer.

The Moonwalk has been held for 25 years in London and Edinburgh and participants can choose to walk either 15.2 miles or 26 miles.

The couple, who live in Matfen, will walk 15.2 miles at night in London starting from Clapham Common on May 20. All participants wear bras that have been decorated to a specific theme.

Anne, who lives with rheumatoid arthritis, said: "Our team name is 30 Years Together, so hopefully we will still be together at the end."

Anne's training began in early February.

She said: "I had roughly 100 days to get walk fit which I thought was plenty of time, I’m not so sure now as it is really hard. On day one, I could hardly walk 100 yards because of my debilitating rheumatoid arthritis let alone 15.2 miles, but now I’m walking more than four miles."

Anne and Mo have to raise at least £100 each.

To help fundraise Anne said she was organising an Easter Sunday afternoon tea at Matfen Village Shop.

The event will be held on April 9 from 3.30pm and costs £20 per person.

This includes unlimited tea or coffee, sandwiches, cakes and more.

"Numbers are limited so it’s essential to book," Anne said.

A bingo night is planned in Matfen Village Hall on Saturday April 22 with doors opening at 6pm.

"One of the real joys of doing these training walks is seeing how the countryside is coming alive after the winter months," she said.

"The woods are covered in snowdrops, the daffodils are coming out and the trees are in bud. Soon I’ll spot a lamb as there are hundreds about to pop out."
