A CAMPAIGN is encouraging pupils to discover the joy of pen pals.
Northumberland schools are encouraged to help students discover friends in The Pen Pals 4 Pupils project.
Children in years 3 to 5 will connect with peers nationwide, offering a safe way to exchange handwritten letters.
Stationery business Maped Helix launched the campaign, backed by radio presenter and bestselling children’s author Chris Smith.
Pupils can attend a free creative writing masterclass with Chris.
Any school can sign up free until May 11.
Maped Helix's head of marketing, Lianne Fletcher, said: “We’re thrilled to take the wraps off our Pen Pals 4 Pupils project, which we hope will help thousands of schoolchildren discover the beauty and excitement of handwritten letters.
“Many people have fond memories of their pen pals from yesteryear and the thrill of getting a letter through the post. We want to encourage young people to take a digital detox and get creative, forging a genuine bond with another child in the process.
“Handwriting is still an essential skill and it’s important children use pen and paper as much as possible, as well as engaging their imagination."
Chris said: “I’m delighted to be involved in the exciting Pen Pals 4 Pupils campaign and would encourage schools in Northumberland to sign up. I hope Pen Pals 4 Pupils helps to reignite that magic and encourages young people to get writing."
