AN IMPRESSIVE willow crown has appeared in front of Hexham Station as part of the town’s coronation celebrations.
The crown, which is nearly a metre high, was made by Ruth Thompson, of Sylvan Skills, and is the result of a Transition Tynedale partnership with Northern Rail to mark the historic occasion with an ‘eco’ theme.
Jane Torday, who came up with the idea, said: "Set in a circular platform at the top of the three tiered planter in the station courtyard, the crown is woven from fresh willow harvested this spring and will endure as a preserved willow sculpture.
"The crown can be enjoyed as a celebration of the versatile and ceaselessly renewing willow plant as much as a royal tribute. It is there to give pleasure to everyone."
Fellow Transition Tynedale member Jane Brantom said: "For Transition Tynedale this is an appropriate way to mark the historic occasion.
"A willow crown created by nationally acclaimed local greenwood artist, Ruth Thompson, at a public transport hub right in the middle of our Edible Hexham beds of herbs, salad leaves and fruit, and all made possible by support from Northern Rail.
"We are delighted that Jane Torday’s idea has come to fruition."
