A69 closed after crash near Haydon Bridge

The road is closed between the B6318 at Greenhead and the A6079 at Acomb after the crash on the eastbound carriageway near Haydon Bridge this afternoon.

Northumbria Police, the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) and the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) have attended the incident.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue has said crews from Haltwhistle, Hexham and Allendale stations are also at the scene.

A spokeswoman for GNAAS said aircraft from Teesside and Cumbria were deployed and they arrived at around 2pm. She added they assisted and treated a patient on the scene. The air ambulances are now back at base.

A NEAS spokeswoman said: "We received a call at 1.29pm this afternoon (Wednesday 10 May) to reports of a road traffic incident on the eastbound carriageway of the A69 in Haydon Bridge, Hexham.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews, one specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader, and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS)."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Shortly before 1.30pm today (Wednesday) we received a report of two-vehicle collision on the A69 near Haydon Bridge.

"Emergency services are currently at the scene, with a diversion in place."

National Highways has said the road is likely to remain closed throughout the afternoon while Northumbria Police continue their investigation.

Diversions

Eastbound

• Exit the A69 eastbound at Greenhead.
• Head North on the B630 and then turn right onto the B6318.
• Remain on the B6318 eastbound to Chellerford.
• At the roundabout take the third exit to remain on the B6318.
• Cross over the River North Tyne. Turn right on to the A6079 and head south.
• Continue to the junction with the A69 at Acomb.
• Turn left to re-join the A69 eastbound.

Westbound

• Exit A69 at Acomb.
• Turn right on to the A6079 northbound towards Wall.
• Continue to Chollerford and turn left on to the B6318.
• Cross over the River North Tyne and at the roundabout in Chollerford take the first exit to remain on the B6318.
• Head west on the B6318 to Greenhead. Turn left on to the B630 and turn right to re-join the A69 westbound.
