A family who were visiting from overseas were grateful for the 'quick' actions of several rescue teams when their first day in Northumberland ended in hospital.

The keen walkers decided to hike around Hadrian's Wall when, unfortunately, one of the family members sustained a lower leg injury besides Robin Hood’s tree at Sycamore Gap.

After being alerted to the incident at 9am on Tuesday, May 24, the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) requested Mountain Rescue’s assistance.

Three 4x4 response vehicles were also deployed from the Rothbury, Pegswood and West Denton bases, with other members travelling direct to RVP at Steel Rigg. Additionally, the NEAS Hazardous Area Response Team was also tasked to respond.

A spokesman said: "Two local members on arrival at the RVP were deployed immediately to the incident site at Sycamore Gap.

"They arrived on scene at just before 10.30am and proceeded to provide medical care to the walker. As soon as one of our 4x4 response vehicles was on scene, the walker’s injury was immobilised before they were transported back to the road in the response vehicle.

"Other volunteer members had been held at the RVP in case assistance for a stretcher carry was required.

"By 11.10am the injured walker was safely handed over to the NEAS crewed ambulance for onward transport to hospital.

"The family who were visiting from overseas were very grateful of our efforts."
