Hexham Courant readers have been discussing a retail expert's claim that Hexham is a 'healthy site' with 'plenty going for it'.
Graham Soult, a retail consultant of CannyInsights.com, gave his opinion on the Hexham high street after the recent closures of Clintons, Iceland and Gaia.
He said: "It's easy to forget that Hexham has a fantastic independent offer.
"I always argue that it's easy to get hung up on the things that you've lost, but if you want things to improve, the best thing that you can do instead is focus on what you've already got and make sure you're supporting those."
He also looked at new businesses in the town: Wallace Flooring store which has recently opened, The Card Factory to open in June and Loungers has chosen Hexham to launch its first north east outlet.
Graham also called for the former Beales site and bus station to be redeveloped.
With his observation of the town, only some Hexham residents agree with his evaluation.
Gary Jesus Wilson who said: "[If you] take a look at CannyInsights.com, the data gathered there is brilliant and Graham is a very experienced, knowledgeable professional. I live Hexham and believe it does have a good future ahead."
Rupert Bradbury agrees with Graham. He said:"Graham is right... and most people would say that Hexham is an amazing place to live.
"It has almost everything that you need here - with new stores opening even if others are closing. One of the units he's stood next to (ie Argos) is about to be redeveloped and opened by a national chain.
"Try visiting many other towns and cities across the UK and you'll see how lucky we are. And just before everyone blames landlords and rates, try blaming yourselves for shopping on line and using the supermarkets for convenience.
"Towns are a reflection of society. It does change and adapt, and I'm positive that Hexham will continue to thrive, not least with the new housing that is being built."
However, many residents do not agree with Graham.
Billy Brunton said: "It's dying just like nearly every other small town in the UK."
Laura White also added:"'Healthy?' There’s nowt there! [It is] such shame. Hexham used to be a thriving town!"
Elaine Taylor agrees with Laura and said: "Hexham is like a ghost town. If they stop putting up the rates and rent it might just help the town a lot more.
"Hexham could be a nice town, [like] how it used to be."
