We asked Hexham Courant readers where the best campsites are in Tynedale.

Here is what they said.

Camping regular, Ray Bather was one of the first to comment.

He said:"The camping and caravanning site in Haltwhistle gets consistently good reviews.

"But personally, I stayed at the Bellingham Camping and Caravanning Club Site and it was excellent. [It has] fantastic facilities, wonderful staff; a beautiful site."

Sticking with Bellingham, Sue Harbottle stayed at the The Boe Rigg just outside Bellingham and believes it was a good site.

Whereas Simon Harrison believes Stonehaugh Campsite is the best. He comments:" The place is absolutely fantastic. Great people, perfect facilities and right on the tip of Wark Forest."

Quick to follow and add other campsites, Gemma Hall and Gemma Wilkinson nominated Greencarts Farm Campsite & Bunkhouse.

Going for the views, David Forster adds:"I think sunniside house camping. As it has great views and fantastic hosts."

But has competition from Gillian Smith Barmurrie Livestock who disagrees with David and said: "Hexham racecourse most picturesque site in the country."

Other venues mentioned were Dilston Scout Camp, Bolbec Manor,  Acomb caravan site, Valley View camping and Demesne Farm Campsite, Wild Camping Northumberlandand Granary Cottage.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) during the first coronavirus lockdown, many people filled their free time with exercise. As restrictions limited other leisure activities, exercise levels increased.

Along with the rise in outdoor exercise, people’s interest in nature surged. In May 2020, 36% of people responding to the People and Nature Survey by Natural England said they were spending more time outside during the pandemic than before. This rose to 46% in July 2020.

Additionally, two years after the pandemic, the recent rise in ‘staycations’ has increased the popularity of caravan parks.

According to Mintel, in 2022, the total number of camping and caravanning trips reached an estimated 16.7 million, a return to pre-pandemic levels.

29% of adults agree that they are more likely to consider taking a camping/caravanning holiday than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Mintel’s market analysis forecasts that the financial constraints felt by consumers is likely to lead to a fall in market volume and value over the next year.
