WE asked our readers if they thought cyclists should be legally required to have number plates.

Here's what they said.

Ray Bather said: "All it could possibly do is put yet another barrier to someone striving to regain fitness or healthy exercise. In particular, electric bikes which have older and less physically able people reintroduced to the joys of cycling," while June Reed said: "I think they should at least have to do a theory test and be insured."

Vikki Firth said: "Yes and insurance."

Steven Bell commented: "Yes. Number plates, MOT and insurance," and Claire Kane added: "Some form of ID on the bicycle, have insurance and perhaps a basic theory test to go on main and major roads to help keep both cyclists and motorists safe and accountable."

Lisa Burnett said cyclists should pay road tax, and Paul Cross said: "They need some form of insurance given how many of them hit pedestrians or other road users. Some have I know through clubs but it needs to be a lot more common."

Brenda Piper said: "I think cyclists should pay a premium each year to use the roads like the motorbikes," and Christine Avery Hughes questioned: "How would ‘number plates’ work exactly?"
