THRILL SEEKERS will be able to zip their way accross the River Tyne in a second annual summer programme activity.

NE1 has teamed up with Zip Wire organisers, Jelly Legs to provide members of the public with the opportunity to take a 'leap of faith' and zip wire from the Tyne Bridge to the Quayside as part of NE1’s Summer in the City events programme.

This is the second summer NE1 has created the thrill and excitement of zip wiring off the Tyne Bridge, and seeing the river, and its bridges from a completely different perspective as they glide onto the Quayside.

Bookings for this adrenaline-fuelled activity can be made via NE1’s Get into Newcastle website for 3 weekends this summer:

  • August 18th and 19th – 9 am – 6 pm
  • August  25th and 26th – 9 am – 6 pm
  • September 1st and 2nd – 9 am – 6 pm

Zip wiring costs £35-40 per person, the only activity within NE1’s Summer in the City events programme that costs.

More than 180 other free classes and activities have been organised throughout the six-week summer holidays, with over 16 free movies each week at NE1’s Screen on the Green, the open-air movie theatre in Old Eldon Square.

NE1’s Summer in the City activity programme draws to a close on Sunday 3rd September in time for the schools to return in the Autumn.

Ben Whitfield, Director of Communications said: “The zip wires were such a popular part of last year’s NE1 Summer in the City events programme that we were determined to bring them back again this year.  It has already been an action-packed summer filled with free activities for the whole family from story-telling with local celebrities Metro Radio’s Karen and Alfie Joey to yoga and dance classes on the Quayside and over 90 free films at NE1’s Screen on the Green.  And, there’s still so much more to enjoy including the zip wiring off the Tyne Bridge.  We are delighted to have curated a packed programme of events that ensures that there is always something going on in the city for people of all ages to enjoy.”

Courant reporter Samantha Teasdale was part of a press pack to try the event (see video), which is from a height of 30 metres and reaches speeds of up to 30mph. Participants travel 250 metres over the river from the Gateshead side to the landing zone near the Pitcher & Piano.
