NCDC is inviting lovers of jazz and traditional cinema to a special screening of the classic silent movie Piccadilly.

The film, produced in 1929, was a resounding success internationally despite the emergence of 'Talkies' in the film industry.

The live accompaniment for the screening will be performed by Chris and Veronica Perrin, multi-instrumentalists with a specialisation in vintage jazz.

Veronica said: “We were attracted to the idea of accompanying Piccadilly as the film is set in the Jazz Age and suits our style of music.

"The accompaniment is improvised and compiled from open-source music for silent films, jazz standards and Tin Pan Alley.

"We think it will appeal to vintage jazz fans, film buffs and the curious alike. "We are delighted to perform on our home turf in Tynedale.”

Piccadilly introduces audiences to Anna May Wong, a scullery maid that is fired for dancing in the kitchen as dirty plates find their way to a diner.

She later returns as a 'novelty dancer' to save the club after the club owner sacks the star performer.

The film touches on various themes such as love, jealousy, voyeurism, fading beauty, sexual tension, racism, seduction, betrayal, and eventually a mysterious murder.

The screening will take place at the Bardon Mill and Henshaw Village Hall on Friday, September 22 at 7pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for £12 or in advance for £10.
