WE asked our readers if they thought cash was 'king' or if local businesses should ask customers to use cards. Here's what they said.
Angel Hill said: "Cash is king. We should always be able to make a choice. Cash is legal tender after all," while John Cody Doherty said: "Cash is king, because the card companies charge a fortune to anybody in fees and small business owners. Some of whom I know personally find it expensive for these fees."
He added: "I do think cards have a purpose in our modern society of lower cash usage."
Chris Mackey agreed cash is king, stating: "What's wrong with allowing to us have the choice instead of dictating to us what we can and can't use to pay for goods and services? The removal of cash is all about control over what and how much of it we consume."
Lisa Cr said: "I don’t think anywhere should be allowed to refuse cash given it is legal tender. But nothing wrong with cards etc. either. Both should be an option to customers."
Edith Gray also said: "The customer should be able to have the choice," as Steven Bell said: "Cash should always be an option and not discriminated against."
Heather Bolam said: "Use cash otherwise we will eventually lose it."
Deb Harm said: "Unfortunately small businesses are being pushed not to accept cash. Bank branches closing makes it more difficult to bank cash/get change.
"Cash is no longer king, there are more costs involved in handling cash, so no longer will the customer receive a discount for cash," she added.
