The Judiciary of England and Wales and the Ministry of Justice are inviting Northumbrians from all walks of life to volunteer as magistrates to better reflect Britain's diverse society.

Data shows that magistrates in Northumbria from underrepresented groups have increased over the past five years, including those under 50 and ethnic minorities, who currently make up 17 per cent and four per cent, respectively.

Anyone between the age of 18 and 70 can volunteer. No legal qualifications or experience are required, just a commitment of at least 13 days a year for five years.

Sean, a Hexham teacher and magistrate of over 15 years, said: “As a gay man, I know what it feels like to be treated unfairly, this makes me really passionate about ensuring that all who encounter the magistracy are treated fairly. We want people from a variety of different backgrounds to join the bench and represent their community.”

Mark Beattie JP, National Chair of the Magistrates’ Association, said: “Diversity is one of the strengths of the magistracy, so we would encourage those from underrepresented groups and areas to apply to perform this most rewarding of voluntary roles. We look forward to sitting alongside you and to welcoming you as members soon.”
