Tynedale welcomes its first Bicycle Mayor, Dr David Dixon.
Dr Dixon, a cycle enthusiast, was appointed following an effort by local councillors to tap into the growing Bicycle Mayor Network.
Originating in the Netherlands, the growing international network encompasses a collection of Bicycle Mayors in towns, regions, and cities across the globe — with Antarctica being the only continent without one.
With the objective of creating liveable, future-proof urban landscapes, the network believes a dedicated cycling ambassador plays a key role in accelerating community progress.
Having moved to Hexham earlier this year with his wife and eight-year-old daughter, Dr Dixon aims to mobilise new initiatives whilst bringing together established efforts to boost local cycling.
He underscores the importance of enhancing the city's cycling infrastructure and extending bike accessibility to those currently out of reach or lacking confidence in their pedals.
Cycling can greatly improve health and well-being, and can also be a money saver when it comes to commuting or travelling to shops.
Encouraging more families with children to cycle will be a high priority, along with working with employers to increase commuting by bike.
Leisure cycling for locals and tourists alike could also potentially boost the economy.
The Bicycle Mayor says it would be good to see local cycle shops set up for sales and maintenance, particularly in Hexham.
Intending to substantially raise cyclist numbers by the end of his two-year term, Dr Dixon is hopeful that Tynedale will become less dependent on motor vehicles.
If any individual or group has a particular cycling issue they would like to raise, they are encouraged to contact Dr Dixon.
Sponsors are also being sought to contribute to fund events, cycle infrastructure, and to assist in making bicycles more affordable.
