1 The Exorcist, 1973 

Voted as the scariest movie of all time by Peter Muir, The Exorcist follows the story of a young girl's demonic possession and her mother's attempt to rescue her through an exorcism by two Catholic priests.

It had a significant impact on pop culture and has been cited by several publications as one of the best horror movies ever made.

2 Jaws, 1975 

Graeme Jardine recommended Jaws. "It taps on and explores prehistoric fears that we all still have in a familiar and realistic setting," he said.

The film was regarded as the initial Hollywood summer blockbuster and has been claimed by critics and industry professionals to be one of the greatest movies of all time.

3 The Shining, 1980

Jill Harrison said The Shining was one of the scariest films. Based on Stephen King's 1977 novel, it explores a writer's descent into madness at the remote and allegedly haunted Overlook Hotel.

4 The Omen, 1976

June Reed voted for The Omen. Geoff Hunt replied: "The Omen series was scary." 

Damien Thorn, a young child replaced at birth by his father, is revealed to be the Antichrist through a series of mysterious incidents and violent deaths that occur in the family.

5 From Dusk till Dawn, 1996

Alison Nightingale suggested the vampire flick and cult classic, From Dusk till Dawn.

A pair of criminal brothers take a family hostage in order to cross Mexico, but find themselves trapped in a strip club frequented by vampires.

6 Watership Down, 1978

Gemma Sim said Watership Down was the scariest film she'd seen, along with Lisa Holden who said: "I totally agree. Freaks me out now."

Since its release, the cartoon has been credited with terrifying young children through its depictions of rabbits being maimed and killed. 

7 Threads, 1984  

Suggested by Roger Higgins, who said: "Should be compulsory viewing for every politician and every armchair general."

The apocalyptic war drama television film centres on two families in Sheffield as a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union erupts.

8 The Entity, 1982

Jo Nelson voted for The Entity. "Saw it once, can’t watch it again," she said.

It features a single mother in Los Angeles who is raped and tormented by an invisible assailant. 

9 Gremlins, 1984

Danny Clyde voted for the Christmas cult classic featuring a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters.

10 Signs, 2002

Emily Rose mentioned several horror movies, one of which was Signs.

"The jump scare in Signs is epic," she said.
