FIREFIGHTERS are 'thanking' members of the public for a 'quieter bonfire night' than usual, the first in many years, new figures reveal.
This year, the control room handled 79 calls and crews only attended 32 incidents compared to 39 last year.
Firefighters were also not subjected to any abuse or attacks over the bonfire period.
Area Manager Joe Haustead from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said: “The 5th of November is generally our busiest night of the year, and we had well-rehearsed plans in place, working alongside Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service, the County Council and Northumbria Police to deal with the anticipated increases in calls and incidents.
“Thanks to our preparedness, the work we’ve done in the run-up with our partners and the public to educate people on the dangers of fireworks, bonfires, and fire safety, numbers were down on the previous year.
"I’d also like to thank all those residents who enjoyed the occasion and who attended the local organised events – which are always the best way of enjoying a safe Bonfire Night.”
