TWO CONTESTANTS from Hexham have won a BBC1 quiz show.
Bank worker Laura and stay-at-home dad Jon from Hexham took part in the 25th episode of the 30th series of BBC 1's Pointless with Alexander Armstrong, who was joined by co-host Andi Oliver.
The pair's hometown was immediately recognised by Alexander for being from Northumberland, which he described as a 'beautiful part of the country'.
From the get-go, the couple gained a 'pointless answer' immediately in the first round when Laura gave the answer of 'ante' when they had to create a four-letter word that included all of the letters 'E' , 'A' and 'T' but could include one other letter.
The score increased slightly to 26 when it was Jon's turn to create a word which was 'TEAM', though he was praised by Andi Oliver for choosing an obvious word that she thought would be a higher score and players would try to avoid it. The team was also praised for the low score as Andi said: "That was a particularly good choice particularly as lovely Laura set you up so brilliantly with the pointless answer."
The next round was French history and Laura chose to answer who was the impressionist artist who painted around 250 pictures of water lilies (Claude, 1840 -1926) which was Monet, and gained her a score of 50, making their score of 99 overall.
Now, the couple had to beat another pair to make it into the final.
The topic was many varieties of Koi Carp, and both couples chose the wrong answer of Ponyo and Uchiki.
The next topic was about fabrics, where the contestants were shown five pictures of different cloth or fabric, and only a few letters of the word were revealed. Laura and Jon went for mole skin which won 16 points leading them to 1-0. The next round was to name a band that had a food group name. Jon and Laura chose The Cranberries and earned a score of 10 - which led them into the final.
At this point, Jon and Laura had won the pointless trophy and were aiming to walk away with the jackpot of £3,250.
The pair chose the topic of international club rugby and gave three answers that were one point away from the pointless answer, missing out on the jackpot - but still walking away with the show's famed trophy.
