In the past year, Northern Gas Networks (NGN) Emergency Response Engineers have fielded over 2,600 calls related to suspected or confirmed Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning.
Among these were 1,027 calls from the North East.
NGN is partnering with the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide group (APPCOG) to promote Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, November 20 to 26.
The campaign focuses on three clear messages; knowing the signs and symptoms to look out for, having appliances services each year, and installing an audible carbon monoxide alarm.
"More awareness about simple steps to tackle CO exposure can save countless lives this winter – let’s work together to keep ourselves and our loved ones protected," said APPCOG Officer Ian Byrne MP.
NGN is giving free CO alarms to regions with low awareness, and are preparing its underground pipes to transport hydrogen, a safer gas alternative, eliminating the possibility of CO poisoning.
Anyone that smells gas or suspects CO should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999
