St John Ambulance has provided first aid advice for cold-induced emergencies.
Hypothermia happens when body temperature drops below 35c, and severe hypothermia, below 30C, is often fatal.
Symptoms include shivering, reduced response, slow breathing and a slow, weakening pulse.
Remove the person from the cold, and if clothes are wet, change them and fetch a blanket.
If alert, they should have a warm drink and some food or chocolate.
They shouldn't be left alone, and 999/112 should be called.
Frostbite happens when skin and tissues freeze, potentially leading to tissue death and gangrene.
Symptoms include pins and needles, numbness, and hardened skin that becomes blotchy and blue.
Take them indoors and warm the affected part without rubbing the skin, and take them to hospital with the limb raised.
After slips and falls on the ice, it can be difficult to differentiate between a sprain and fracture. If a person cannot bear weight, or if there is any deformity, seek medical advice.
