A series of people from across the North East have been recognised in the King’s New Year Honours List.
Among the recipients for the New Year Honours List for 2024, Michelle Southern in Northumberland has been awarded an OBE for founding Street Paws, a charity that offers veterinary care to the pets of the homeless.
Robert Williamson, who has made a huge contribution to the voluntary and charitable sectors in the North East for more than 30 years, has also been awarded an OBE.
Others awardees such as Brian Palmer, Denise Speight, Penelope Walters, Lawrence O'Halleron, Ronald Wright, and Gwyneth McKenzie were recognised for their contributions in diverse fields ranging from manufacturing to community development.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: “To all honourees, you are the pride of this country and an inspiration to us all.”
Oliver Dowden, Deputy Prime Minister, said: "Everyone from the North East receiving honours today represents the best in British communities.
“I send my warmest congratulations to this year’s recipients, all of whom are incredibly deserving for what they have achieved."
The North East has previously been underrepresented in the honours system, with the latest stats showing that 26 people, or two per cent, of honours go to people in the area.
